Storm Debris

LITTLE ROCK — The Little Rock Landfill is still taking any storm debris that residents have remaining after last weeks winter storm.

A release from the city of Little Rock stated that solid waste crews are still working to remove any debris as well as working on damage that could hinder area residents. That includes fallen trees and branches, as well as bushes and other loose landscaping.

Warren Atkins, Solid Waste Manager for the City of Little Rock, said that city workers are putting in 10-to-12 hour shifts to bring in what's left over from the winter storm that hit on Christmas night.

In all, Atkins said 616 tons of solid waste debris had already come into the area landfills in the past four days, with an even larger amount still out in the streets and in residential areas.

"There's still a whole lot out there," Atkins said.

For comparison, Atkins said that for the entire month of January in 2012, the city brought in 2,300 tons.

While the amount of waste coming in is, obviously, unusually large, Atkins said that he doesn't think that, while it's just an educated guess, the damage is as bad as it was after the 2000 ice storm that ravaged the city. Atkins said that he believes the city brought in 30,000 tons from that event alone.

Residents who would like to report any storm damage can call 3-1-1 or go to www.littlerock.org and click on the 3-1-1 logo on the page. All vegetation that is taken in will eventually be made into mulch.

For those that want to contribute, The Little Rock Landfill is open Monday-Friday 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. Those with garbage, yard waste and construction and demolition debris may bring it to the landfill for a fee, the release also states. Those curious about the fees can contact the Landfill Scale House at (502) 888-5806.

Recycling Update

Next week, Jan. 7-11, Waste Management Recycle Collection will pick-up excess recyclables that won't fit into your container.

If you have accumulated more than your container will hold, put the extra in Paper Sacks and place it next to the container.

Boxes should be broken down and stacked next to the container.

The Waste Management driver will get out of the truck and collect the extra when they empty your container.

This will be ONLY for regular routes next week.

Please share this with your neighbors.

Power Crews at Work

Thank you to Pike Electric, whose crews have been working to restore power to Broadmoor. Pike http://www.pike.com/ teams from as far away as North Carolina have been cutting limbs and repairing lines.

From Mayor Stodola's daily report: Entergy has brought more than 1,500 workers to Little Rock to do repair work, including 700 workers who arrived last night from Georgia and Florida. Other workers have come from Alabama, Missouri, Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana.

If you notice that the power in your neighborhood has been restored but the power at your home has not, please call 1-800-9OUTAGE again. It is important to call again because Entergyâs resources might indicate that your entire neighborhood has restored power while your home is without power.

Mayor Stodola's Ice Storm Update 3

Ice Storm Update 3

CORRECTION - The phone number to report outages to Entergy is 1-800-9OUTAGE.

I toured the City by air early this morning withEntergy officials to view areas still without power and to observe the multiple Entergy staging areas. Entergy has over 1000 linemen working Little Rock specifically, manning approximately 500 Utility trucks and 500 vegetation trucks that are removing fallen trees and limbs from power lines. Entergy advises that the damage to power lines from this storm is comparable to the damage experienced from the ice storm in 2000.
Approximately 20,000 meters were restored to power yesterday reducing the number still without power to 38,312 as of 11pm last night. Electricity flows from the substations to the circuits, to the laterals, to the transformers and then to individual houses. Entergy reports that by tonight 100% of the circuits will be operational, however that does not ensure that your power will be back on as the laterals, transformers and then individual trouble reports have to be repaired.

Trees and limbs on private property will be removed from power lines by Entergy but will not be removed from the property. Please deposit your yard waste at the curb so LR Public Works can pick it up. We are waiving all bundling requirements. If your service has been ripped off your house you must get an electrician to repair your service. The electrician is required to get a permit from the City but all permit costs are being waived.

IMPORTANTLY, IF YOU HAVE NOT YET CALLED IN TO REPORT THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE POWER, THEN PLEASE CALL 1-800-9OUTAGE. Please don’t assume that Entergy knows specifically that you do not have power. Damage to individual lines going to the houses must be reported so they know specific trouble locations. If you have already called, you do not need to call again. Entergy is hopeful that an additional 20,000 meters can be restored today. All areas of the City currently without power are being worked by Entergy.

Entergy opened a Customer Information Center at 900 Louisiana Street this morning (Saturday, 12/29). Entergy Staff will be on hand to visit with individuals that have been, and continue to be affected by power outages. The center will remain open until the majority of the power is restored to theLittle Rockarea.

City staff continues to work around the clock to address all of the issues caused by this storm and will continue to do so until the City returns to normal.

City public works crews are now focusing on clearing residential streets of snow and ice. Salt crews will continue to salt streets that have an accumulation of ice and snow and as the temperatures warms, crews will move to the day shift to assist with the removal of trees, limbs & brush. Staff is aware of at least 300 locations with limbs and trees in the right-of-way. If you are aware of any tree or storm debris in the right-of-way, please call 311 and report the location.

The City’s 311 Center will operate seven days a week, from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM until the City’s power is restored and the storm debris is removed from the right-of-way.If residents have storm debris in their yard and can move it to the curb, Public Works will waive any requirements that the limbs be a certain length or width. City staff will pick up and remove all storm debris.

The City’s Solid Waste crews continue to pick up residential trash and will assign extra staff to each truck to pick up residential trash that is placed on the curb, if the trash cart is too full. Solid waste crews expect all routes to be caught up by Saturday, December 29th. Solid Waste crews will run Monday’s routes on Monday. With January 1, being a holiday, Solid Waste crews will operate on the holiday pick-up schedule next week. With the exception of Monday, all routes will be run one day late.

Waste Management began collecting the Thursday recycling routes on Friday (12/28) and is running the Thursday, Friday and Wednesday routes this weekend.

The Little Rock Fire Department reports that there was one structure fire on Friday (12/28); however, there were no injuries.

The Little Rock Police Department reports that all shifts are fully operational and that the city is being served as it would under normal conditions.

The City’s Planning Department will waive the cost of reconnection fees and inspection fees for any meters that were damaged due to the ice storm. A Master Electrician needs to obtain the permit on behalf of the individual needing the work completed.

The City has dedicated theSouthwestCommunity Center, located at6401 Baseline Road, as a warming center. It will be in operation today (12/27) from 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM and from 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM. The Center will operate through January 1, 2013, or until it has been determined that a majority of the City's power has been restored.

Individuals are encouraged to bring their own bedding, cell phone chargers, snacks, entertainment, etc. This Center will also operate through January 1, 2013, or until it has been determined that a majority of the City's power has been restored. The number for theDunbarCommunity Centeris 376-1084.

Upon individual assessment of need, the Little Rock Fire Department will provide transportation for the elderly and disabled to the shelter or other locations for shelter.

Ice Storm Update

The City of Little Rock is providing the following information in response to the recent ice storm. City staff continues to work around the clock to address all of the issue caused by this storm and will continue to do so until the City returns to normal.

Entergy reports that several additional circuits were lost Thursday evening, causing the number of meters without power to increase. As of 12:00 PM on Friday (12/28), 58,834 meters were without power in the Little Rock area.
Entergy Staff reports that there are 258 people on the ground scouting areas to determine what needs to be done to restore power. Currently the assessment is 100% complete on the circuits and 50% complete on laterals; Entergy’s goal is to increase that number to 75% by Friday evening.

On Saturday, December 29, 2012, at 10:00 AM, Entergy will open a Customer Information Center at 900 Louisiana Street. Entergy Staff will be on hand to visit with individuals that have been, and continue to be affected by power outages. The center will remain open until Monday (12/31) or Tuesday (1/1).

Individuals should call 1-800-9OUTAGE to report any downed power lines.

City Staff reports that the main streets are clear and staff is now focusing on clearing residential streets. Salt crews will continue to salt streets that have an accumulation of ice and snow and as the temperatures warms, crews will move to the day shift to assist with the removal of trees, limbs & brush. If residents have storm debris in their yard and can move it to the curb, Public Works will waive any requirements that the limbs be a certain length or width. City staff will pick up and remove all storm debris beginning on Saturday (12/29), and will continue to do so until all storm debris has been removed. This will take several weeks.

The City’s Solid Waste Crews report that Tuesday & Wednesday routes were collected on Thursday (12/27); however, only about 20% of the individuals on those routes placed their carts at the curb. On Friday, (12/28), Thursday routes were collected and once they were completed, staff returned to re-run the Tuesday and Wednesday routes. On Saturday (12/29), the Friday routes will be collected, and once again upon completion, staff will re-run the Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday routes to ensure that all garbage has been collected Staff reports that there are several North-sloping streets with large amounts of shade that they have not been able to access and that any streets with wires in the road or low-hanging limbs are skipped and placed on a list for pick-up when conditions improve. As of Friday (12/28), there were thirty-two (32) trucks in operation.

Today (12/28), Waste Management began collecting the Thursday recycling routes and if they complete the route, they will look at going back at picking up the Tuesday and Wednesday Routes.
