Pool Cover Removal Rescheduled to Tuesday, May 4, 6 PM

Saturday's effort to remove the cover from Broadmoor Pool was thwarted by the 4.12 inches of rain Broadmoor received Friday night. As you can see, the cover is a huge tarp that seals the pool from fall and winter elements and debris. It takes a lot of people to unsnap, peel, and fold the cover!

The Mitchells have been running a pump to remove the water from the cover. We will meet to remove it Tuesday night at 6 p.m.

The pool, like all our other efforts to make Broadmoor great, runs on volunteer power. Pat and Calvin Mitchell volunteer their summers to manage Broadmoor Pool, and a host of other neighbors help out with other needs, like staffing the concession stand. Check out the pool Facebook group.

New Basketball Rim Installed

The brand new, heavy duty basketball rim is up!

Police Meeting Tonight at 6:30

The Little Rock Police Department's Northwest Patrol Division, which serves Broadmoor, will hold its next Quarterly Neighborhood Meeting on April 22.

The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. at the Northwest Substation, 10,001 Kanis Road (near Baptist Hospital).

These are very informative meetings where you can discuss crime statistics and crime prevention directly with the LRPD leadership. Chief Stuart Thomas usually attends, too.

Please make plans to attend and encourage your neighbors to go with you.

Law School Class to Discuss Neighborhood Study April 26

During the Spring 2010 semester UALR Law School Professor Lynn Foster, Adjunct Professor Cliff McKinney, and Professor Paula Casey offered a service-learning course, Neighborhood Development.

The seven students in the class worked on several projects with the University District Development Corporation and the neighborhood associations in the district. Broadmoor was one of the neighborhoods studied. On Monday, April 26, three students will make brief presentations about their service projects at the law school.

Development Corporation Re-Roofs 8 Homes

The University District Development Corporation (UDDC) has secured funding from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas' Special Needs Assistance Program ("SNAP") grant to replace the roofs of eight homes in University District neighborhoods. SNAP funds provide up to $5,000 toward minor repair costs for homeowners age 55 or older or those having a documented disability and income of 80 percent or below the median income for the area.

The Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas' region includes Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and New Mexico. Each member bank can receive up to $90,000 for local rehabilitation grants, and the Dallas region has a total of $1.5 million to award on a first-come, first-served basis. Homeowners receiving the grant must stay in their home for five years for the loan to be fully forgiven. This is the second year of SNAP grants. Several homes in the state benefited last year.

UD Talent Showcase

Six UALR students who are Americorps members working with the University District Partnership on a youth initiative are hosting a talent show featuring youth from the District from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 30, in the UALR Donaghey Student Center, Room G. The show will provide an outlet for self expression while stimulating the young students' creativity and literary activity. The talent show categories include poetry slam and short stories, music, voice, and other artistic forms such as magic, joke telling, and visual art. The goal of the youth initiative is to expand and improve opportunities for adolescents who live in the area.

The University District includes the Fair Park, Broadmoor, Point O'Woods, College Terrace, Oak Forest, University Park, War Memorial, and Curran-Conway neighborhoods. For more information about the talent show, call 501-683-7356 or email university.distict@yahoo.com.
