Police Tips for the Holidays

Little Rock Police tips for times when you leave home during the holidays:

• -Make sure that all windows and doors are secured and locked.
• -Leave a light and radio on.

If you are traveling out of town:

• Call the Police non-emergency number, 371-4829 or 4830. To make a report over the phone 501-371-4617. and ask for a "vacation home report."  The police will patrol your home on every shift.
• Tell your neighbors when you are leaving and expect to be home.
•  Stop your mail and newspaper or have a neighbor collect them daily.

In your car:

• Park in a well lighted area.
• Do not leave valuables in sight.
• Have your keys ready as you approach your car.
• Ask for an escort from the store if you have a number of packages or feel unsafe.

Lookout for your neighbors:

• Talk to them and understand their coming and going.
• Be watchful for unknown vehicles at their home.
•  Report ALL suspicious behavior by calling 911, every time you see it.

When driving:

• Lock your car doors.
• Be mindful of the weather, watch for ice.

Tree Streets Plants Street Trees Downtown

This Saturday morning, Tree Streets will continue its 2010-2011 tree planting project along historic Louisiana Street from I-630 to Roosevelt Road.  For years, this beautiful neighborhood has seen significant restoration and in-fill activity, and Tree Streets will do its part to help ensure that its streets have the sort of tree canopy that all neighborhood streets deserve. 

We will meet this Saturday morning at Community Bakery (I-630 & Main St.) at 9:00 a.m., and we should be finished by 11:00 a.m.  Our work this weekend will be in the 1700-1800 blocks of Louisiana Street.  Once finished we will prune nearby young trees planted in earlier years.  Please remember that if it is raining (or snowing) steadily at 8:00 a.m., the day's work will be cancelled.  Tree Streets will provide all of the necessary tools.  Children, grand-children, and pets are all welcome to join in the work.

New Fence on Broadmoor Dam

If you've driven by and looked across the dam, you have seen the
brand-new, shiny new fencing.  It looks great!


Thanks to the hard work of board members Karen Walls and Liz MacKenzie, the 50-year-old fence has been replaced. 


Karen and Liz also spearheaded the effort to have the concrete drainage pipe walls on the walking path on the north side of the lake repaired. It looks very nice and will prevent further erosion of that part of the walking trail.  


The concrete contractor is going to provide s a bid to repair the swimming pool deck, too..

Solid Waste Update from Fair Park Residents Association

The City of Little Rock collects household garbage weekly in a City-provided cart. It is picked up by a garbage truck with a hydraulic arm. Since this is a fully automated system, it is necessary to place the cart with the handle facing away from the street, and no more than 5 feet from the curb, so that the arm will be able to reach it. Also insure that the cart has at least a 3 foot clearance on either side of it.

Please be sure your garbage cart is placed at your collection point by 7:00 a.m. on your collection day, and removed from the street the same day following pick up.

To request a City-provided garbage cart, repair or replacement to an existing cart, call 311.

To request an additional cart at a cost of $7.00 per month with a three month minimum usage period, call 311.

To report a missed garbage pick up, call 311. If you are unable to reach a 311 representative you can call their direct line at 371-4437.

Promise Neighborhoods Institute Will Tour Neighborhood This Thursday!

Two members of the Promise Neighborhoods Institute and a staff member from the Harlem Children's Zone will be in town this week to learn more about our "promise neighborhood" and ways they may be able to assist and support our efforts over the next year.

The more complete a picture of our neighborhood, schools, and challenges we can give them, the more effective their help and assistance will be so we invite anyone interested in sharing their knowledge of the neighborhood or in just learning a little more about the Harlem Children's Zone approach to come out and meet and talk to this team. We will be holding informal, drop-in receptions in both the morning and evening on Thursday, with the hopes that all interested would be able to attend one or the other.

The Argenta Community Development Corporation in North Little Rock is really busy. Check out their electronic news here.

Two Broadmoor board members serve on the University District Development Corporation. We are just at the point of selling our first house, but, someday, we hope to be as busy as Argenta.

City Adopts University District Land Use Plan

The Little Rock City Board of Directors recently adopted land use changes recommended by the University District Revitalization Plan.

The Planning Commission adopted the recommendations in July and forwarded them to the city board for consideration. The land use plan is a visionary document that sets the overall direction for real estate development in the area. The most significant amendment was to change the land use plan in the Colonel Glenn corridor from commercial to mixed use, encouraging developers to consider incorporating office, institutional, and residential uses along with commercial development.
