Please Take this UALR Safety Survey

Chancellor Joel Anderson created the Chancellor’s Committee on Public Safety to examine safety on campus and to make recommendations to ensure that UALR is a safe place and is perceived as a safe place to study, live, and work. One of the tasks of the committee is to gather information about safety and perceptions of safety from those on campus and in the surrounding neighborhoods. To help in gathering this information, the committee is surveying students on campus, students in residence halls, faculty and staff, and residents of the community.

I encourage you to fill out the survey at the link provided and give feedback to the committee on your experiences and perceptions of safety on campus. This is an important part of continuing to ensure we have a safe and inviting campus.

If you have any questions about the survey or the committee, please contact Dr. Jeffery T. Walker, Chair, Department of Criminal Justice at jtwalker@ualr.edu.

Safety Baby Shower on May 18

If you or someone you know is expecting and lives in the Central Little Rock Promise Neighborhood (most of 72204), please sign up for the Safety Baby Shower this Saturday:

There is still time to register!!! Arkansas has one of the highest child injury rates in the nation. Infants are at a particularly high risk for injury due to their small size, lack of strength, and biological development. Deaths due to unintentional injuries can often occur in the home and in motor vehicle crashes, and many are unpreventable. In an effort to address these issues, Arkansas Home Visiting Network and the Central Little Rock Promise Neighborhood will host a Safety Baby Shower at the Children’s Library, 4800 W. 10th on May 18th at 10:30 a.m. This event is geared towards new or expectant mothers who live within the Promise Neighborhood (zip codes 72202, 72204, or 72206).

This is an educational session, in a festive, shower-themed atmosphere, complete with refreshments, decorations, games, and prizes. Education is provided on home safety, safe sleep, shaken baby syndrome, and child passenger safety. Shower gifts include various home safety products, instructional dvds on infant crying, and each participant will receive a car seat and meet with a Child Passenger Safety Technician near her delivery date. This will ensure that parents are properly trained on installing their child’s car seat correctly.

Arkansas Home Visiting is a network of free programs available to help parents and their children. These programs focus on working with a family in their own home on a regular schedule to address basic needs, resources, referrals, parenting skills, and providing information about how your child is developing. Home visiting is an added benefit to a child and the family. A new baby can be a welcome addition and a stressful time for any family. Every parent struggles with questions and doubts about what the correct things to do. The goal of every parent is to create a better life with unlimited opportunities for their child.
Home Visiting opens the door to a brighter future!

Currently, Arkansas Home Visiting Network is recruiting 60 families to enroll in home visiting services who live within the Central Little Rock Promise Neighborhood. Families who are prenatal or have children not yet enrolled in kindergarten could be eligible for FREE services. If you know of any currently prenatal families that would be interested in attending this event or interested in home visiting services please feel free to contact Nichetra MaGee at 501-682-9528 or mageen@archildrens.org.

Pool Work Day Saturday

Find those winter clothes you were just about to store away for the summer and meet Pat and Cal at the pool Saturday morning at 9:30. It will be chilly, but the work will soon have us warm!!!

A major task will be to remove the pool cover so we are in need of all the muscle we can get!

Yard of the Month

The Yard of the Month for May goes to a longtime resident of Broadmoor. It is located at 42 Lakeshore Drive. For many years, people walking around the lake in the spring stand and marvel at the beauty of the back yard of this home. The front yard has a display of beautiful iris and roses to enjoy. The resident cannot take care of the yard as before, but the flowers continue to bloom to bring joy to all of us.
