GRANT WRITING AND MANAGEMENT TRAINING
FALL 2012 SCHEDULE
The City of Little Rock Finance Department is again offering classes on
various aspects of grant writing and management. These classes are
available for free for all city employees, Little Rock Neighborhood
Associations, City of Little Rock Outside Agencies, Little Rock
non-profit agencies, Little Rock sub-grant recipients and grant
partners. Class size is limited, so be sure to register early and let
the Grants Division know if you cannot attend. To register for any or
all of the classes, contact Caran Curry, Grants Manager at 501-371-4583
and specify which of the classes you would like to attend. All classes
will be held in the second floor Board Room at City Hall at 500 West
Markham from 2 PM until 5 PM. Free parking is available behind City
Hall.
The first class is entitled "Grant Writing 101" and will be held
on Wednesday, October 10, 2012. It will focus on the importance of
organizational readiness, the planning process and the design of grants.
It will also cover ways to locate appropriate grant opportunities
including using Grants.gov and the Foundation Center. It will also
address the most important topic of relationships with granting
agencies.
The second class is entitled "Writing the Grant Narrative" and
will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2012. This class is designed for
the novice grant writer and will feature things to do to make the
application more competitive. Topics include writing the proposal
narrative, goals and objectives, sustainability, letters of support,
documenting and describing collaborative efforts, Memoranda of
Understanding, and more.
The third class is entitled "Creating a Grant Budget" and will
be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2012. This seminar will be most
useful to individuals who have never prepared a budget for a federal
grant project. It will also cover allowable and unallowable costs, and
computing and documenting match.
The fourth class will feature a panel of grant writers who will answer
questions and will provide tips on grant writing. It will be held on
October, 31, 2012.
The last two classes are entitled "Effective Grants Management"
and will be held on Monday, November 7 and 14, 2012. These two classes
will be most useful to individuals who actually manage federal or state
grants, but is also helpful for grant writers to understand all of the
obligations that grants entail. Topics will include the types of
grants, grant statutes, regulations, Office of Management and Budget
Circulars, the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance, pre-award
agreements, project implementation, time and effort documentation,
timely expenditure of funding, draw downs, Cash Management Act,
financial management, program income, procurement, audit requirements in
including SEFA, certified assurances, debarment and suspension, record
retention, inventory, recordkeeping and retention, copyright and rights
in data, prior authorizations, interest, non-supplanting, and closeout
requirements. Audit requirements in including SEFA, A-133 Cumulative
Supplement and submission will also be covered.
